Portugal D7, D8 and D2 visas

Updated September 2026. These visas may be relevant to people planning to live in Portugal, but buying a property does not guarantee visa approval.

D7 visa

Broadly intended for applicants with stable income of their own. The evidence required depends on the current rules and the applicant’s circumstances.

D8 visa

Generally associated with remote work or professional activity carried out for organisations outside Portugal. Current income and documentary criteria must be checked.

D2 visa

May be relevant to entrepreneurs and people planning a business activity in Portugal. The application considers the proposal, investment and viability.

Before buying a property

  • Confirm the appropriate visa route before making commitments.
  • Check documents and timing with the relevant Portuguese consulate.
  • Obtain independent legal advice.

Use the official Portuguese visa portal for current guidance.
